Serving Behind a Mean Proxy

I have a very nice connection at the my college and a friend is willing to tell me what ports are open in the firewall so that I can serve with high upload speeds.
Today I can download through the proxy without any problems.
I think I saw on another string that serving behind a proxy is impossible.
Is that true even if I configure mIRC to upload through a specific port?

A "certified" answer would save me a lot of time and hassle...
