windows xp pro freezes

i have reformatted my computer 2x and reinstalled all windows updates.it has been happening so far in efnet servers that i start a download and between 1min to 5 mins into the download my computer freezes and unfreezes and eventually windows just freezes and i drop connection to the server and eventually have to restart windows.has anyone ever encountered this problem ? i have scanned system with norton professional a/v nothing came up , scanned for spyware with spybot search and destroy nothing .i have had it happen with plain mirc without running excursion still the same problem..any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated ..

What other programs are you running? Note that programs such as E-Donkey can cause complete loss of Internet connection when used at the same time as mIRC.
